How Old Is Too Old for Breast Implants/Breast Surgery? in Breast Augmentation, Breast Implants .

As people are living longer lives and want to look younger, many women wish to retain the physical characteristics of their youth as much as possible. They are getting facelifts, tummy tucks, and – of course – breast implants.

Many women wait until long after their childbearing years before having breast augmentation for a younger-looking figure. Let’s talk about what time is the most appropriate time in which a woman should get breast implants, and whether there’s an age limit for getting them.

When Should I Get Breast Implants?

Women who are in their 50s or later are getting breast implants to help them look as young as they feel. This surgery is a viable option for a woman as long as her overall health is good.

Talk to your plastic surgeon about whether you are a good candidate for breast implants, or whether there is a better method to achieve the look you want. Doctors today offer many different options for helping people look and feel younger regardless of their age.

Women who have lost volume in their breasts from bearing children, or simply as a result of aging, are usually ideal candidates for breast implants. Women may also wish to consider a breast lift in addition to the added fullness provided by implants in order to get the results they desire.

What Type of Implant Is Best for Me?

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has approved silicone implants and saline implants for breast augmentation surgery:

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone breast implants tend to be more stable and retain their shape better than the saline version, and they do not collapse even if the silicone leaks out of the implant shell. One type of silicone implant is called the “gummy bear” version, which is made with a thicker and firmer gel inside.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants have saltwater inside the shell. If they collapse and the saltwater leaks, it is absorbed by the body and naturally eliminated.  The downside is that if the implant does collapse, it will look asymmetric compared to the other breast until it is corrected by a surgeon. Surgery becomes more risky as we get older, so that is something to consider.

The various types and shapes of breast implants all have positives and negatives to them, so the choice is based on what the patient wishes. There are always new materials being created for implants, so talk to your plastic surgeon about appearance, durability, and other aspects of the breast augmentation procedure.
