People used to be constantly focused on losing weight in order to look slim and trim, but consumers are now placing more and more importance on health and overall wellness. Noninvasive body-sculpting treatments have gained a solid reputation in cosmetic medicine thanks to their ability to reduce fat in specific areas where the bulge just seems to never go away, regardless of how much dieting and exercise the person does.
Two of these noninvasive treatments, which have both been approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), promise a leaner and healthier look without the need for surgery (such as liposuction). They are CoolSculpting and Zerona.
They are not weight-loss procedures per se, but they do reduce fat cells. We each have a set amount of fat cells starting at about puberty, and the cells get larger if we gain weight and smaller if we lose weight.
Let’s take a look at these two noninvasive fat-reduction procedures and how they work.
What Is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting, whose technical name is cryolipolysis, is a popular noninvasive procedure for fat reduction that eliminates targeted fat cells by freezing them and literally killing them off. It usually takes several months after the procedure for the body to completely eliminate fat cells via the lymphatic system, but the fat cells are then gone forever.
It targets specific areas in the body that are resistant to diet and exercise. The FDA has cleared CoolSculpting for treatment in the following areas:
- Under the chin
- Under the jawline
- Underneath and beside the breasts
- Upper arms
- Abdomen
- Sides of the abdominal area
- Back
- Underneath the buttocks
- Thighs
How Zerona Works
On the other hand, Zerona is a treatment that employs a laser to shrink fat cells. This cold laser treatment is called low-level laser technology (LLLT), and like CoolSculpting, it does not cause harm to nearby tissues.
The laser creates small pores in the protective membranes of the targeted fat cells so the fat inside can leak out. The cell size is thereby reduced, but the cell itself remains.
The fat cells collapse into a smaller size, so the area looks slimmer. The fat material that leaks out of the cells will be naturally flushed out from the body. This technology can be used to reduce fat in the following areas:
- Neck
- Chest
- Arms
- Abdomen
- Back
- Hips
- Thighs
- Ankles
Which Is Better?
Whereas CoolSculpting kills and eliminates the targeted fat cells, Zerona diminishes the fat cells in size but the cells remain alive. A comparison of the two body shaping procedures shows that both treatments yield positive physical results. Both options require no anesthetic and no recovery time, so you can go back to your normal daily activities after your session.
The effects of CoolSculpting and Zerona can be reversed if the patient reverts to an unhealthy lifestyle, eating too much and exercising too little. Both procedures are meant for people who do not need to lose considerable weight but rather have stubborn pockets of body fat.
